Under the current COVID 19 restrictions, we have enough room for these, but we cannot encourage greater numbers to attend and we cannot offer any hospitality or opportunity for people to mingle. Everyone has made great sacrifices over the last year and he does not want this occasion to be the time when we throw that all away. MUSIC AT SAINT MARTINS

St Martin's Choir is a dedicated group of people who sing at the Parish Mass at 10.15 a.m. each Sunday morning and at the 7.00 p.m. Sung Mass on Holy days. It also provides full liturgical music during Holy Week and the Christmas Carol Service on the afternoon of the 4th Sunday in Advent is now something of a local tradition. New choir members are always welcome. We use the New English Hymnal and Celebration Hymnal and Mass Settings written since the liturgical revisions of the second half of the 20th Century. The Choir sings music from Plainsong, Handel and Bach... to Paul Inwood, Christopher Walker and Bernadette Farrell. We hope there is something for all tastes.

THE ORGANS
There are two organs in regular use at Saint Martin's:-
A Viscount Envoy 350FV in the main church and a Wyvern C220 in the Lady Chapel.

The Viscount Envoy 350FV Organ was installed in the main Church in November 2018, and here you see our former Director of Music and Organist, Mr. Robert Osmond, playing it following our Saint Martin's Day celebration on November 18th.

In this photo you see Robert with the Wyvern C220 following our Dedication Festival in July 2018. The fan reminds us of the unprecedented heat-wave we were experiencing at the time!

This Organ had served well for twenty-five years in the main Church, but was showing signs of its age, so when the opportunity arose to obtain the Viscount Envoy FV Organ almost new at a very discounted price, we took it up. We are very grateful to the many people who made contributions to fund its purchase.

The Wyvern C220 Organ remains with us in the Lady Chapel, where it is still used from time to time.

War Memorial Board

The faculty for our new War Memorial Board was granted in December and it has now been permanently affixed in its place in the Church Baptistery. We were pleased that Mrs Brenda Hayward who paid for the Board in memory of her husband Squadron Leader Philip James Haward, RAF (RTD) M.B.E. was able to see it its it permanent position when she was briefly visiting Torquay from her home in Spain.

Here is a photograph of the Memorial in its permanent position:

The War Memorial Board was dedicated during our Remembrance Sunday Service on November 11th 2018,

as described below.

Remembrance Sunday 2018

Our Remembrance Sunday service on Sunday November 11th began at 10.15.a.m. and reached its climax at 11.00.a.m. - just in time for the Two Minutes Silence which we observed with the entire country.

This year's Remembrance Sunday was especially significant, because it was the One Hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in 1918, which effectively brought the First World War to a close.

Here at St. Martin's, the occasion was even more important, because a new War Memorial was dedicated at the service, on which is inscribed the men of Hele and Barton who died in the two World Wars.

We know that within our community are many descendants of the men whose names are shown here, and we are glad that some of these were able to attend our Remembrance Sunday Service.

There has never been a complete War Memorial at St. Martin's Church until now. Among the various reasons for this, is principally that Hele and Barton were part of the parish of St. Marychurch until 1960, and the names of those who died from Hele and Barton were inscribed on the Memorial at St. Marychurch, but there was no public Memorial in the actual community of Hele and Barton.

St. Martin's has been the Parish Church for Hele and Barton since 1960, and - coming up to the sixtieth anniversary of the creation of Hele and Barton as a separate parish - the lack of a War Memorial actually in St. Martin's Church has been an omission which is long-overdue in being filled.

A facsimile of the new Memorial - which is an inscribed board of English oak with black lettering - is shown below. The Memorial has been given in memory of a peace-time ex-serviceman, Squadron Leader Philip Haward, RAF, MBE, who died in 2015, and who was a long-time resident of Barton and a Churchwarden at St. Martin's.

We were delighted to have a good representation at the service of uniformed members of the 11th Torbay (Barton) Scouting Troop.

During the Service Father Gorran delivered a thought-provoking sermon on the theme of Promises - commencing with the Promise that the Scouts make on joining, talking about the promises that we all make as part of ordinary life and also how important it is to keep them even when it is inconvenient or costly to do so.

He then moved on to Britain's entry into the First World War, to keep a Promise. "Will Britain go to War for a scrap of paper?" asked the German Chancellor - and the famous answer was: "No, not for a scrap of paper, but rather that treaties may be held sacred, that the weak may be defended, that promises may be honoured, that the world may be made safe for small and vulnerable nations, and that the power of the mailed fist shall be broken." And so the promise was kept, paying a huge and terrible price.

Finally, he spoke of our National War Memorial - the Cenotaph (which is Greek for "empty tomb") in London. This reminds us of Jesus' resurrection from the dead, and God's ultimate promise to each of us - that "your tomb will one day also be empty, because you will be found not among the dead but among the living"

Our new War Memorial Board prior to its unveiling and Dedication, covered by the Union Flag.

The floral tributes were from the widow and family friends of Squadron Leader Philip Haward,

in whose memory the new Memorial was given.

After the Remembrance Sunday service, we see pictured here from left to right:

Russell Buckingham, Churchwarden,

Lucy Price of the 11th Torbay (Barton) Scouts bearing the Union Flag,

Parish Priest, Father Gorran Chapman, who dedicated the Memorial,

Brenda Haward, of Alicante, Spain, formerly of Hele Village, who gave the Memorial Board in memory of her husband Squadron Leader Philip James Haward, RAF (RTD) M.B.E. 1946-2015, late of Great Hill, Barton,

Elizabeth Price, bearing the Unit flag,

Helen Buckingham, Churchwarden
St. Martin's held a Sunday lunch in the Church Hall, after our Mass on Sunday January 13th 2019.
Our January lunch has become an annual event, and it consists of a three-course Sunday lunch, with Roast Turkey as the main course -for many of us this is the final time of eating turkey until next Christmas!
Seventy-five people sat down to the meal, which was cooked by Captain Jeremy Sugg of the Church Army, who is a friend of Father Gorran's and a great friend to our parish.
In addition to people from St. Martin's, we were pleased to welcome several friends from the congregation at St. Marychurch, as well as other friends from further afield.
A Raffle was held during the lunch, and many prizes were won.
Profits from the lunch and the raffle and other donations reached the sum of £500.00, which we have donated to the local "ShelterBox" charity, for their emergency appeal for Indonesia. By doing this, we hope that our lunch will result in people less fortunate than ourselves having their needs provided for as well.
The lunch was a very enjoyable occasion. Perhaps YOU might like to join us in January of next year?

Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday - October 19

We celebrated our Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday with gifts blessed at our morning Parish Mass, for distribution to the sick and housebound of our Parish, our local foodbank - Torquay Community Larder, and the Leonard Stocks Hostel, besides donations to those further away via Shelterbox. In the evening, we continued our celebration with a Service of Evensong and Benediction, giving thanks for God's many blessings. This was followed by Harvest Supper in the Hall. We enjoyed a great evening with good food and company, and raised further funds for the Additional Curates Society, which helps to provide the Priests who are to be the workers in God's 'Harvest of Souls'.
Next year's Pilgrimage will be on Saturday 13th July 2019, with further details on their website here.
In the above photo you can see the candles at our Epiphany Ceremony of Light, which was held last Sunday 6th January. Each candle placed there by a member of the Congregation symbolises their willingness to be a light for Christ. In the early Church it was such lights (people) who lit up the World for Christ - in fact, they set the world aflame with their willingness to stand up for Jesus. So in our Ceremony of Light we prayed that we may show the light of Christ to the people of Barton and so set it afire in the love of Christ as we seek to serve each other.

Cream Tea - September 2019

Our programme of Autumn activities began on the afternoon of Sunday September 1st, when a number of us enjoyed a Cream Tea at the Barchington Avenue home of Leslie Pym and Jane Cruttenden, aided by Leslie's mother, Jean, who ran a Raffle during the event. The sun shone, and we all enjoyed ourselves. The event raised £250 for Church Funds, and will be put towards the upgrading of our much-needed Church security equipment.

The A35 replaced the A30 in 1956.

There were various mechanical difference between the two cars,

but the outward appearance of an A30 and an A35 was very similar.

Christmas Fayre - December 7th 2019

Our Christmas Fayre was a great success, raising £2,551 towards the upkeep of Saint Martin's Church. Much of that was due to our Raffle, and we thank all who supported us by buying tickets and donating prizes. There were also many attractions which provided a great variety for our visitors.

We were especially pleased to welcome a number of children in to 'Santa's Workshop' this year, where they were busy making reindeer food, snowman pictures, Christmas tree fir cones and plates.

Father Christmas himself came and visited them as they were happily working away at these.

Many thanks to all who helped in the preparation and running of the event and packing away afterwards, and of course everyone who came to sample what we had on offer.

If you are looking at this page because you are thinking about getting married, first please accept our congratulations on your engagement! Christian marriage is a joyful and demanding commitment. Be assured of our prayers for all those preparing for marriage.

We would be thrilled for you to get married at Saint Martin's. You can be married at St. Martin's if you live in the parish, if you are a regular worshipper with us (regular is defined as more or less weekly for six months) or if you have a 'qualifying connection'. A qualifying connection includes any of the following:

You were Baptized in the parish You were Confirmed in the parish You have ever lived in the parish for at least six months Your parent or grandparent was married in the parish Your parent(s) have ever lived in the parish for at least six months during your lifetime Your parent has habitually attended public worship in the parish for at least six months during your lifetime Do contact us if you are not sure about the parish boundaries, or about your entitlement regarding any of the other qualifying connections listed above.

We take the care of wedding couples very seriously. The parish Priest will meet with you several times before the day to help prepare you for marriage, and also to sort out the practicalities of the service, including the music, readings and flowers.

If either of you is divorced, and has a former spouse still living, please consult the Vicar.

This table of fees shows the current charges for a Church wedding, which are fixed nationally. Extra charges are payable for the services of an organist, choir or flowers if required.

Videorecording of the service requires special approval and incurs an additional fee.

For further information, please contact the Vicar. (see the PEOPLE page)

Once again, please accept our congratulations! We look forward to welcoming you to St. Martin's.

Funerals

It is now possible to hold a Funeral in Church, but due to the Coronavirus emergency there are still some restrictions. Please contact the Vicar to discuss.

A Memorial Service / Requiem Mass can take place in Church after the pandemic crisis is over.

To make arrangements for the funeral of a family member or friend, please contact the Vicar, either directly or through a Funeral Director. (For most funerals at St. Martin's we normally recommend the services of K.J. Lack Family Funeral Services; T & I Stockman or The Co-operative Funeral Care in Barton Road). The clergy will make every effort to meet with you at the earliest opportunity, to support you in your bereavement and to plan a funeral service in keeping with the faith of the person who has died.

At St. Martin's it is possible to have a simple funeral service, with two or three hymns, readings, an address, and some organ music.

Often at St. Martin's a funeral is conducted in the context of the Eucharist ('Requiem Mass'). It is sometimes possible to arrange a small choir to provide a range of choral music. The Clergy are also very willing to officiate at funerals at Torbay Crematorium, or in the private Chapels which are situated on the premises of a number of local Funeral Directors.

It is also a good idea to prepare for your own funeral, and to leave instructions about it in your will or with your family. At St. Martin's, we keep in a secure safe a number of written lists of funeral wishes, which people have chosen to deposit with us. Please feel free to talk about any of this with the Vicar - please see the PEOPLE page.

Baptism (Christening) and Confirmation

Baptisms are now allowed to take place, but due to the Coronavirus emergency there are still some restrictions. Please contact the Vicar to discuss.

Baptism (also called Christening) is the means by which someone becomes a member of the Church. In the Church of England we Baptise children and adults. The water of Baptism washes away sin and gives the gift of eternal life, making the person being Baptised part of the Body of Christ, the Church.

If you live in the parish or worship with us regularly - or if you would like to worship with us regularly - you are encouraged to bring your child for Baptism. We normally Baptise at an agreed time on a Sunday afternoon, but it is also possible to include the Baptism at the 10:15am Sung Mass on Sundays. You will need three Godparents, who should be Baptised and, ideally, also Confirmed, and regular Churchgoers themselves.

Godparents are required to assist and support and encourage their Godchildren in growing up to know and learn the Christian faith, and the truths and values which go with being a Christian. They are required, during the service, to make statements of their own personal beliefs in God, and their acceptance of belief in the Christian faith, and their practice of it. They need to be able to make these solemn promises and commitments with integrity.

Baptised children who are ready to affirm their own faith are encouraged to prepare for Confirmation in special classes designed for their age group (we normally prepare children for Confirmation from age 10 or upwards.) Most children make their First Communion when they are Confirmed.

Confirmation ("or laying on of hands upon those that are baptized and come to years of discretion", as the Book of Common Prayer explains it) is administered by a Bishop. It marks the adult ownership of the promises made at Baptism, connects you to the wider Church, and gives you the Gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear (i.e. respect) of the Lord (Isaiah 11.2). It is the normal route through which people are admitted to Holy Communion.

Confirmation takes place at various times throughout the year. If you are an adult seeking Baptism you may be Baptised and Confirmed at the same time. Adults do not need Godparents, as they are making the promises themselves, but they may have Sponsors if they wish.

If you are interested in the possibility of being Baptised or Confirmed, please contact the Vicar. (see the PEOPLE page)

There is no charge for Baptism or Confirmation - the gift of faith is free. However, there is a fee of £14.00 for issuing a certificate of baptism.

The Clergy and people of St. Martin's have been deeply shocked by the sudden death of one of our long-serving worshippers, Steven Turnbull.

Steven died on Sunday afternoon (November 29th) while swimming off Torre Abbey Sands. He was only 73 years of age, and he had been with us in Church earlier that Sunday.

Steven had, over many years, co-ordinated our Church's support for Christian Aid. He had also worked for Christian Aid on a wider basis; and over the years, with the help of the Parish, he had raised tens of thousands of pounds for this charity. His strong social conscience had been aroused partly by his deep Christian faith, and also - in his early years - by the influence of his parents, and particularly his mother, Freda.

At a later date, and elsewhere, Father Gorran will pay longer and more fulsome tributes to Steven in written and spoken form. For now, we acknowledge Steven's death; our shock and our grief; and our thoughts and prayers for Steven, and also for Rita, his wife.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

During the time when our Churches have been closed for public worship, we were not able to receive Holy Communion physically, which was a painful thing for many of us. The tradition of the Church has been for people to make a Spiritual Communion when they are prevented from receiving actual Holy Communion. St. Thomas Aquinas says, about this, that we should have "an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament, and a loving embrace as though we had already received him." You can pray the prayers below as often as you like, but most specifically at the time when you would normally be present at Mass.

In this parish, that time is Sunday morning for an hour from 10.15.a.m.

My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament, I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. And, as though you have already come, I embrace you, and I unite myself entirely to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. And / Or

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread of life and the one true vine. I believe that you are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. I seek you. I worship and adore you. Since I cannot receive you in the Eucharistic bread and wine, I pray that you will come into my heart and soul, that I may be united to you, by your all-powerful and ever-present Holy Spirit. Let me receive you and be nourished by you. Become for me the manna in the wilderness, the bread of angels, for my very human journey through time: a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, and solace in the hour of my death. I pray this, trusting that you yourself are our Life, our Peace, and our everlasting joy. Amen.
Saint Martin, our Patron

The story that most people know about Saint Martin, portrayed by the statue to him in our church, was one event in a long life devoted to bringing Christianity to the Celtic world.

Martin was born in what is now Hungary at a time of great change in the formation of Christian Europe. The Roman persecution of Christians had recently ended and Rome was in decline. The Emperor Constantine was supporting the Christians although not one himself until his death. The main problem was that now Christians were not being persecuted they had leisure to wonder what being Christian actually meant. Many different interpretations of the scriptures began to emerge with violent disagreement about the nature of God. Our Creed was developed around this time with its emphasis on the Eternal Nature of the Trinity.

Martin as a youth had wanted to be Confirmed into the Christian faith but his father, an old soldier of the Roman army, had other ideas. He sent a brigade of Guards to capture his son and carry him off to serve in his own legion of the Roman army.

It was while serving as a soldier that the most famous event occurred. Outside the gates of the town of Amiens Martin encountered a beggar freezing in the cold winter weather. As a soldier Martin had no possessions of his own, all he had was his stout wrap-around 'army issue' cloak which often served him as a sleeping blanket on the ground at night. Taking his sword he cut the cloak in half giving half to the beggar. That night Martin had a dream in which he saw Jesus wearing the cloak. This was the confirmation he needed to leave the army and follow his will to 'fight' for Christ. Even leaving the army proved difficult. The story goes that the Emperor wanted to give medals or gifts of money to his best soldiers on the eve of a battle. Martin stood in line to receive his and when it was his turn, announced that he wanted to leave the army. This was not well received and Martin was accused of cowardice.

To prove he was no coward, Martin announced that he would stand on the battlefield next day and fight alone. Luckily - or providentially - the battle next day was called off and Martin was allowed to leave. It was then that his real work began. He had always wanted to become a hermit and live alone, and eventually settled not far from Tours at a spot called Liguge where he soon attracted followers who came to live in caves near his hermitage. However he was not to be left in peace and when their beloved Bishop Hilary of Tours died the people of the town wanted Martin to be their new Bishop. Bishops in those days were much more like a local pastor than they are today and lay people had much more say in the election of their bishop. Other local Bishops could have their say, but it was often down to the townsfolk, and they sent a deputation to Liguge.

Now, Martin was very happy living as a hermit, by this time. He had around him the beginnings of a kind of monastic set-up and in fact he has been credited with being the 'Father of monasticism'. The local people then had to resort to deception. One of the leading officials of the town went to Martin and told him that his wife was dying. Martin had developed a reputation for healing and was often in demand to attend the sick and mentally ill, so, unsuspecting he journeyed into town. It was a false call and once the townsfolk had got him into town they would not let him go until he had agreed to become their Bishop.
This was not the end of his career. He set up another monastic community at Marmoutier nearby, and spent the rest of his life preaching, healing and destroying heathen shrines. He travelled many miles on foot or by donkey to spread the faith. He inevitably attracted opposition but his "awe-inspiring spiritual powers" enabled him to spread the Christian faith throughout France and his influence was felt from Ireland to Africa and the East. He died on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 397. Working up to the last he had answered a call to go down the river to Candes to settle a quarrel. By the time he arrived he was exhausted and the quarrel was hastily patched up so that he could rest. He died a few days later. The story continues that the men of Tours wanted to take the body home for burial, but the men of Poitiers, near his erstwhile home at Liguge wanted the body, so the men of Tours waited until everyone was asleep and smuggled the body out of a window into a boat waiting on the river below to take him back to the place where he had been a Bishop for so long.

Many churches in England are dedicated to him, probably the best known being St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. Martin's great Abbey at Tours, built to house his relics, was a famous centre for pilgrimages until it was destroyed in the 16th century, rebuilt and destroyed again in the 18th and two streets opened up on the site to prevent it being rebuilt. The twin towers remain and a small basilica was built to hold the excavated remains of the original tomb.
