Posted 11th December:

The Funeral Requiem Mass for Steven Turnbull is to take place at St. Martin's on Wednesday December 16th, but - sadly - due to the restricted number of people currently allowed at Funerals, this service has had to be limited to invitation only.

The evening before, though - Tuesday December 15th - Steven's body will be resting overnight in the Church, and there will be a Requiem Mass for him at 7.00.p.m. that evening, which is for Church friends and others from the community.
If you have not been asked to attend on Wednesday, please do come instead on Tuesday evening.

Donations in memory of Steven are invited to St. Martin's Church, and will be used in our 2021 Christian Aid Appeal.
Donations may be made at the Church services by Cash or by Cheque,
or alternatively sent to Father Gorran at St. Martin's Vicarage, 10, Beechfield Avenue, Barton, Torquay, TQ2 8HU.
Cheques should be made payable to "St. Martin's P.C.C." and marked "Steven Turnbull" on the back;
and BACS payments are also welcome - please contact us for details.

The Clergy and people of St. Martin's have been deeply shocked by the sudden death of one of our long-serving worshippers, Steven Turnbull.

Steven died on Sunday afternoon (November 29th) while swimming off Torre Abbey Sands. He was only 73 years of age, and he had been with us in Church earlier that Sunday.

Steven had, over many years, co-ordinated our Church's support for Christian Aid. He had also worked for Christian Aid on a wider basis; and over the years, with the help of the Parish, he had raised tens of thousands of pounds for this charity. His strong social conscience had been aroused partly by his deep Christian faith, and also - in his early years - by the influence of his parents, and particularly his mother, Freda.

At a later date, and elsewhere, Father Gorran will pay longer and more fulsome tributes to Steven in written and spoken form. For now, we acknowledge Steven's death; our shock and our grief; and our thoughts and prayers for Steven, and also for Rita, his wife.
